In the role of an administrator, one must understand
that fixing a problem isnt always a straight and easy line.
One must be able to automate, script and monitor things that
sometimes are nonstandard.
This is a small handful of examples I've collected over the years that
demonstrate some of my abilities.
Cacti: Cacti is my monitoring solution of choice.
It is a wrapper for RRDtool, with which you can
graph anything that can be represented numerically.
For this example, in addition to system specs
I am graphing ports on my Cisco 2924XL, and the weather
for my local zipcode in Rancho Bernardo.
Intelligence Chameleon: This is a network I designed and implemented for
a previous employer. It is a many to many proxy.
The design has been patented and I am listed as an inventor.
My previous employer is still waiting on paperwork to
finalize that motion.
I currently employ the use of Nagios and MediaWiki
for my alerts/monitoring, and documentation respectively.
I find the combination of these peices of software absolutley
essential in the upkeep of a healthy environment.
Scripts
lifter2.pl - a script that selects 250 ips from the IC database and ifconfigs them
phishing-net.pl - a script which parses a mail log and finds people who fake their 'from' addresses
billing-local2.pl - a script which parses apache logs and counts http codes and bytes transferred

This was a migration from an old rack, to a new one.
